Five Hills Blue Merlot

Five Hills Blue Merlot, 2004, from organically grown grapes – a wine we recently purchased from Trader Joes and recently opened. The only problem is that it wasn’t recent enough to remember details about it, other then it was tasty, smooth, and we liked it. I can’t say that I think the organic grapes TASTED much different from non-organically grown wine, but organic grapes tend to leave a better taste in your mind at least. 😉 (I think it also still had sulfites in it, which many ‘organically grown grape’ wines do, but not all.) But if you want to try a wine made from organically raised grapes, this is a decent place to start.

Strawberry Extravaganza

I’m a little late with posting these, but we did find things to do with all those strawberries (including giving two boxes to co-workers – LOL). Two of the things we managed to take photos of – a lovely fruit and cereal combo, which was quite delicious:

And, strawberry mousse! It was very light, but quite strawberry still. We’ll post the recipe once we remember where we put it – LOL. For now, just a photo:

Tortellini Alfredo

I’d like to say that this was all homemade, but it’s not. Still, that doesn’t mean it wasn’t delicious! The tri-color tortellini was dried and bagged and from Trader Joes, and the alfredo sauce was from the good people at Classico. Makes a pretty picture, doesn’t it! (And the Classico sauce didn’t have MSG in it, as far as we can tell, which is something we definitely look for these days – harder to find pre-made, non-MSG infused, jarred Alfredo sauce than it should be!)

Peanut Butter Into Diamonds?

“Peanut butter is being turned into diamonds by scientists with a technique that harnesses pressures higher than those found at the centre of the earth. Edinburgh University experts say the feat is made possible by squeezing the paste between the tips of two diamonds creating a ‘stiletto heel effect’. The scientists also revealed they can turn oxygen into red crystals using the same method. ”

And all this time I thought the CRUNCHY peanut butter variety just had chunks of PEANUT in it – HAH! And there’s got to be a joke in there about Diamond Brand Nuts too… somewhere…. Read Entire Article. (Link courtesy of Unearthed Tees Geology News)

Raspberries and Yogurt and Strawberries

With all the fresh fruit available, we’re being challenged to think up new ways to incorporate fruit into our cooking/eating! Although, we do have the old ‘mix it with vanilla yogurt’ idea to fall back on – a classic, of course. (Mountain High Yoghurt also has no high fructose corn syrup! Just sayin’.)

I just love this photo of a raspberry sitting in yogurt, as one can too easily forget how ‘hairy’ raspberries are – LOL!

Oh, and now John just emailed me from work saying he got a huge box of strawberries, and I’d better start thinking of ways to eat them! (How about my usual, clean and cut them up, sprinkle a bit of sugar on them, and then just eat ’em til their gone… not very glamourous, but it’s very hard to resist strawberries, especially while you’re trying to think up ways to EAT them in the first place.) Stay tuned for more strawberry-related posts!

Organic Toaster Pastries

I’ve liked having things like Pop Tarts around as backups for times when you run out of milk for cereal, or just want a snack in the afternoon. But at some point (a long time ago now it seems) Kellogg’s Pop Tarts changed their formula – my theory is that they added more high fructose corn syrup and deleted any remaining ACTUAL flavor – resulting in pastries that were hideously sweet yet still alarmingly tasteless. As a result we stopped buying them completely.

But this is a story with a happy ending! At Trader Joe’s we rediscovered the Toaster Pastry… ORGANIC, FROSTED TOASTER PASTRIES!!! By Nature’s Path. We got blueberry and strawberry, at the same price or even cheaper than a good price for Pop Tarts at the grocery store, and they were delicious! I KNEW they could still make toaster pastries with flavor – LOL – plus all organic ingredients, and no high fructose corn syrup. Yes! So, as you can tell, we highly recommend them – going to stock up our next trip to Trader Joe’s!

Tyson to Sell Chicken Free of Antibiotics

Tyson said it would no longer use antibiotics to raise chicken sold fresh in stores. (I guess that doesn’t apply to any FROZEN chicken products by Tyson?) Seems it will be slightly more expensive too, but probably still okay if you can’t afford to buy organic free-range chicken all the time. Anyway, it might already be in your stores, with packaging that emphasizes no artificial ingredients. Click here for the full article.

Virgil’s Root Beer

It’s almost a meal unto itself – one bottle of Virgil’s Root Beer is more like a dessert. It’s really not just another carbonated drink you can pound down while you’re eating a burger. It must be savored and meditated upon!

There’s so many complex flavors dancing around on your tongue everytime you take a sip, you’ll wonder how you ever drank those mass-produced, high fructose corn syrup “root beers” before at all. It’s not cheap, but if you consider it an investment like a fine wine that will raise the experience to the level it deserves to be.

Strawberry Waffles

It’s pretty simple. Our regular old homemade waffles, usual recipe, topped with fresh cut and cleaned strawberries that have been sprinkled with just a few teaspoons of white sugar.

Make sure you prepare the strawberries just a wee bit before (the night before works well, but at least a couple of hours) so that they create a nice amount of sweetened strawberry juice to drizzle on the waffles too. We had no whipping cream to top the strawberries, but the waffles were excellent nonetheless!

Mmmmm… strawberries and waffles!
